Home Security Is No Joke

Many home owners seem to think that burglaries only happen at night when you’re home. The FBI has stats that tell a different story. Most crimes, burglaries included, happen during the day when you’re away.

You can take actions to prevent these criminals from getting away with all that you own.

Here’s a few home security tips for your home.

1. Review all the locks on your home. Replace those that do not lock well.
2. Have your neighbor pick up your mail when on vacation.
3. If you can swing it, have your neighbor park their car in front of your home and move it at least once a day. This makes it look like someones home
4. Install a wireless security system. A wireless security system can be monitored with your laptop while you’re away.
5. Contact you local law enforcement and let them know you’ll be away for an extended period of time. Notify them on your return as well.
6. Use automatic timers on several lights in your home plus a radio or TV. Stagger them to come on and go off at different times. Remember, you want someone to think you’re at home.
7. Know what kind of home security system you need before buying something off the shelf. A bad home security system is worse than none at all.

Following these security tips won’t guarantee you that trouble will not visit you but it will help deter many criminals.

In addition to your own home security system, you should have you home monitored by a security company such as ADT or Brinks Home security. Don’t rely on the police to come running when ever your alarm goes off. I’ve seen response time run anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour after an alarm goes off. A burglar can have your whole home packed up and gone by that time!
